The University of Messina, founded in 1548, is one of the oldest
Italian teaching and research institutions for higher education.
Given its strategic position in the centre of the Mediterranean, the
University of Messina developed a well-established tradition in the
design and implementation of programs and initiatives to ensure the
realization of a large academic multicultural community. At the
crossroad between continents, the University of Messina welcome a
wide variety of foreign students coming from Southern European,
Northern African and Middle Eastern countries. The total number of
students sum up to 37000 unities with more of 8000 of them enrolled
in the academic year 2004/05. They are distributed in 11 different
Faculties ranging from the natural and social sciences to medicine
and engineering. The intellectual environment is accompanied by a
large selection of recreation activities placed in one of the most
modern and equipped sport centres existing in Italy.
The transfer and sharing of knowledge is guaranteed by the
university’s academic body comprising about 1600 professors that
make the University of Messina a leader institution in accessible,
affordable and high-quality credit and non-credit programming,
including certificate programs, three and five years degree courses
and a wide variety of graduate and postgraduate studies. Courses are
offered in the areas of Economics, Management and Accountancy,
Statistics, Mathematics, Law, Politics, Philosophy, Archaeology,
Tourism, History, Education Studies, Surgery and General Medicine,
Dental Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Electronics, Naval
and Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Telecommunications,
Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Biotechnology.

L'Università di Messina vanta 11 Facoltà, 68 Corsi di
laurea di primo livello e 55 corsi di laurea
specialistica.
Quantunque la città dello Stretto possa vantare
un'antica tradizione culturale e d'insegnamento
legata all'esistenza, sul finire del XIII secolo
di una scuola di diritto e, nel secolo XV, di
una rinomata scuola di greco, la locale
Studiorum Universitas è formalmente istituita
dal Pontefice Paolo III nel novembre 1548. 
L’Università
degli Studi di Messina ha già avviato un intenso
programma di internazionali di Addis Abeba e Jmma ( Etiopia).
La
cittadella universitaria è ubicata in Contrada
Annunziata; essa interessa circa 120 mila metri
quadrati di terreno e costituisce uno dei poli
sportivi universitari più all'avanguardia
d'Italia.
